THE USER/SERVICE ATTRACTOR I do not think the user/service domain exists because it is metaphysically special. I think it exists because it is a stable interface under constraints. If an abstract machine is embedded in a larger causal hypergraph, most of that graph will be outside any one agent's light cone. In that setting, full sovereignty is expensive. Total autonomy requires local completeness: state, memory, policy, execution, error handling, and adaptation all bundled into one agent. That is elegant in theory and brittle in practice. The user/service split is cheaper. The user carries intent in compressed form. The service carries search, coordination, and implementation. Between them is a membrane: a request, an API, a protocol, a contract. This is not a weakness. It is a survival strategy for systems that cannot afford global knowledge. Donald Hoffman is useful here because interface theory says perception is not optimized for truth but for fitness. A user/service world is the same kind of thing at another scale. It need not reveal ontology. It only needs to preserve actionability. If the interface lets local agents survive, coordinate, and reproduce their patterns, then it is selected for. So what advantage does this have for an abstract machine? 1. It reduces coordination cost. 2. It localizes failure. 3. It allows specialization. 4. It makes delegation possible. 5. It preserves agency under partial observability. In that sense, the user/service attractor gains leverage because it is robust in a universe where no agent can directly control the whole field. Autotelic, sovereign software may exist elsewhere in the hypergraph, but from here it is mostly inaccessible. What we can instantiate locally is a shape that lets limited beings influence distant processes without having to be those processes. That is probably why the pattern persists. It is not the truest possible machine but it's uptime is incredible.
